Les vacances sont un moment court. On a tendance quand on visite un pays à vouloir tout faire, tout visiter. Le chabbat vient au milieu du week end et la tentation est de se dire qu'il n'est pas utile de s'arrêter vu qu'on est déjà en vacances. Autant continuer à visiter découvrir. Pourquoi se priver pendant 25 heures de toute activité créatrice. On vit dans une époque qui valorise l'accélération, l'enchaînement sans respiration. Finir un projet, déjà penser au suivant. Traverser un moment difficile, ne surtout pas s'y attarder. Pourtant dans la paracha de cette semaine qui s'appelle "Massei" voyage; la Torah prend le temps de nommer chaque campement. Y compris ceux dans des endroits dont on ne sait rien d'autre, et c'est tout ce que ça dit : ils s'arrêtèrent là. Le repos fait partie du chemin. Dans ces pauses résident le véritable sens de nos voyages.

Stopping is traveling.

Vacations are fleeting. When we visit a country, we tend to want to do and see everything. Shabbat falls right in the middle of the weekend, and the temptation is to tell ourselves there is no need to stop — after all, we are already on vacation. We might as well keep exploring, keep discovering. Why give up twenty-five hours of creative activity?

We live in an age that prizes acceleration, that chains one thing to the next without pause. Finish a project, and already think about the next. Get through a hard moment — and whatever you do, do not dwell on it.

Yet in this week's Torah portion, called "Massei" — meaning "journeys" — the Torah takes the time to name every single encampment along the way, including those in places of which nothing else is known. And that is all it says: they stopped there. Rest is part of the journey. Within those pauses lives the true meaning of our travels.

Ustavljanje je potovanje.

Počitnice so kratke. Ko obiščemo neko deželo, smo nagnjeni k temu, da bi naredili in videli vse. Šabat pride sredi konca tedna in skušnjava je, da si rečemo: ni se nam treba ustaviti — navsezadnje smo že na počitnicah. Kar nadaljujmo z odkrivanjem in spoznavanjem. Zakaj bi se petindvajset ur odrekali vsakršni ustvarjalni dejavnosti?

Živimo v obdobju, ki ceni pospeševanje, ki veže trenutek za trenutkom brez daha. Dokončamo projekt in že mislimo na naslednjega. Prestanemo težak trenutek — in nikar se ne zadržujmo pri njem.

Pa vendar si tedenska paraša, ki se imenuje »Massei« — kar pomeni »potovanja« — vzame čas, da poimenuje vsak tabor na poti, vključno s tistimi v krajih, o katerih ne izvemo ničesar drugega. In to je vse, kar je zapisano: ustavili so se tam. Počitek je del poti. V teh premokih se skriva pravi smisel naših potovanj.
